About the ACL 2.0 learn through play programme

This blog has been set-up as part of Auckland City Libraries (ACL's) 2.0 learn through play programme to encourage employees to experiment and learn about the new and emerging social media technologies that are reshaping the context of information on the Internet today.

The objectives of this program are to:
  • encourage exploration and usage of web 2.0 tools by ACL staff so that they can answer customer queries about these social media tools

  • provide ACL staff access to these web 2.0 tools

  • and reward ACL staff with a cool 8GB USB memory stick if they complete the programme by 5.00pm on Monday 29th March 2010.

The original 2.0 learn through play programme was designed by Helene Blowers, Technology Director of Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County and is loosely based upon Stephen Abram's article, 43 Things I (or You) might want to do this year and the website 43Things.

The design of this online program was completely built on Web 2.0 technologies that are freely available on the Internet. These sites include: Blogger, Flickr, Delicious, YouTube, PBWiki & Bloglines.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How does this online learning program work?
This is a self-discovery program which encourages employees to take control of their own learning and to utilise their lifelong learning skills through exploration and PLAY. Only one workshop held on Wednesdays each week at central to support this program. Instead, employees are encouraged to work together and share with each other their discoveries, techniques and "how to's" both in person and through their blogs.

  • Is this program open to all ACL staff or just some?
This program is open to ALL ACL employees regardless of position and status (full and part time). If you are not a member of the ACL staff, you are welcome to follow along.

  • How long do I have to complete the program?
The program takes 9 weeks if you choose to do one thing every week.

  • How do I track my progress for each of the 23 Things?
The ACL administration team will keep a blog to track your progress. The overall progess will be logged in the Learning 2.0 Log.

  • If I'm not a ACL staff member, can I still participate?
Yes, by all means. If you join the programme while we are tracking it, we will comment on your blog. However you will not be eligible to receive a prize.

  • I already have a blog, should I use my own or set up a new one?
We suggest that you may like to set up a new gmail and blog for this exercise and delete it at the end of the programme. Remember that blogs are available for anyone on the internet to read and you should only publish personal information that you are comfortable showing others.

  • I can never remember my password, do you have any suggestions?
We recommend that you use the same user name and password for each you are asked to signup. This way you are less likely to forget.

  • Why 23 things instead of having participants do 43 things like the website?
Given the timeframe of the program, the number of "things" was reduced so that employees already burdened with busy work schedules wouldn't feel overwhelmed by having too many discovery exercises to complete in a week.

  • Will there be any training classes offered to show staff how to do this?
Yes there is one workshop at central, however this is a self-directed learning program. If you feel you need assistance with an item, you are encouraged to be resourceful and to find a co-worker or another staff member who can help. Reading other staff member's blogs can help, too.

  • Can I work ahead through the list of items on my own?
Yes, of course. You are encouraged to self-direct your discovery process, especially by working ahead on your own!! However, if you do work ahead on some items, be sure to check back on the exercise details for each item once they are posted so you can be sure to recieve full credit for its completion.

  • What if I need help - who can I call?
Since this program is self-directed and is being completed by many staff members throughout the system simultaneously, you are encouraged to work with colleagues along your discovery journey. To find a list of staff participating see The Participants....or you can email us at aclelgar@gmail.com

  • Is there a prize?
Yes there is a prize for all ACL staff who complete the programme before 5.00pm on Monday 29th March 2010. The prize is an 8GB USB memory stick.
